Solving Mental Problems

Mental problems come in a variety of forms. They may be as simple and intense as stress or as complex and difficult as Schizophrenia. However, every effect has a cause. And getting to the cause is the key to solving the problem.

People are generally better off if they can solve their own mental problems. The exception to this, of course, is the cases in which the individuals do not have insight into their mental problem. For example, a person who is obsessive and compulsive may not know the seriousness of their problem. In fact many who are obsessive and compulsive will deny they have the problem at all.

What would be a good system to use in order to reduce or extinguish a mental problem?

1. The individual should be the first to have an opportunity to solve the mental problem.

For example, if a person has a problem sleeping, they may begin to take liquid Valerian Root. If this solves the problem then there is no need for anyone else to get involved.

2. The individual should be receptive to receiving a solution for a mental problem from a member of the family.

For example, a father may notice that his son has the same propensity toward being paranoid as he did. If he is able to explain this to the son and thereby give the son insight into the problem then a final solution may be more easily implemented.

3. The individual who is disruptive as a result of a mental problem will, of course, generally have a solution forced upon them. This force, when necessary, should first be applied by the members of the family. If this works, then nothing more is needed.

For example, if a child has behavior problems at meal time, throwing food to the four corners of the room, then the parents will usually find a solution through the use of reward and punishment. The solution, in most cases, is obvious.

4. There are the moderate and severe mental problems, which are those that appear not to have a solution that can be implemented by the family or by the individual. This is the point as which consideration is given to the idea of calling in a professional. The professional may be in the form of a behavior scientist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or counselor.

In some moderate and mild cases of mental problems a counselor may be able to solve the problem by causing the individual to have insight into the problem or by getting the family members involved in implementing the solution.

In moderate and severe mental problems, a behavior scientist can be of help by keying a behavioral solution to the problem based on the perceived motive of the behavior. This also, will usually involve the active participation of the family members in working out a final solution to the problems.

Psychologists may be of benefit by administering testing to find out, in detail, the individual's ability to adapt to a variety of situations and apply solutions in order to transcend the mental problems.

Psychiatrists may be of benefit when drugs are needed in order to help solve mental problems. Obviously, drug-free solutions are the best. However, there are times when this is not practical or possible. The psychiatrists can also advise the individual as to which drugs will address the mental problem and give advice as to the side effects of the drugs and the long term effect of continued ingestion. They can also help adjust the dosage to be within the theraputic level.

5. There are some severe mental problems that cannot be solved in the home environment. These mental problems, which cause removal of an indivdual from the home, are the ones which cause a person to be dangerous. For example, someone injuring others frequently or injuring themselves frequently or swallowing non-food items frequently fit into this category. These individuals may need the services of an institution or a secure mental care facility or a behavioral group home.
