Punishment is any operation that has the effect of reducing the incidents of the target behavior.
Punishment consists of many different contingencies. It varies according to individuals. Removing a desirable activity is a common punishment for most people. Removing a favorite food is an effective punishment in many cases. If we work in a job and we are not performing in the manner in which our employer is pleased with, then he may reduce our wages. This is an effective punishment. Of course, we may quit our job, which may serve as a punishment for our employer. We live in a world in which punishment is given and withdrawn back and forth between individuals in an ongoing process that is fairly constant in its contingencies.

When a care giver is in charge of a person who requires punishment as a part of their therapy, it is important that the care giver be careful not to frustrate the individual. The individual needs to be aware of the fact that the same person who is delivering the punishment is the same person who can deliver rewards in return for appropriate behavior.
When setting up punishment contingencies, it is important to set up schedules in which there is the likelihood of success. No one wants to be faced with negatives for inordinate periods of time.

Be sure to explain the punishment to the individual. Punishment that is not understood can be of limited value.
Always be willing to review the punishment for effectiveness and application. A punishment that is too mild may be just as bad as a punishment that is too harsh.
Don't punish someone with a contingency that they think of as a reward. For example, schools will sometimes suspend students from class as a punishment. There are many students who consider the suspension as a reward. So suspension will, in these cases, cause an increase in the behavior that caused the suspension in the first place.
