Reward

Reward is any operation that has the effect of increasing the incidents of the target behavior.

In the long run, consistent rewards given to individuals have the most potential to improve behavior. Rewards may be in many forms: money, food, activities, awards, recognition, praise.

We should be careful not to overlook rewards simply because they may not be commonly used. The stronger the reward, the more effective the behavior improvement will be.

If you do not know what the individual considers rewarding, then you may inquire by asking them or you may perform a reward sampling. A reward sampling consists of giving the individual objects, food, or activities that are generally considered as rewarding. Based on the reaction of the individual, you should use the objects, food, and activities that the individual has indicated by their reaction as rewarding.

Individuals who consider food as rewarding may present a special problem. They may be overweight and therefore are in need of practicing more discipline in their eating behavior. Rewarding someone who considers food as rewarding is a special problem. It is necessary to find food items that taste good and yet do not contribute substantially to health problems (such as obesity or diabetes).

There are some food, such as rice cakes, that are designed to cause a person to feel full without contributing to their overweight condition.

Food items that are both starch and carbohydrate should be avoided or eaten in small quantities. As much as is possible, sugar should be avoided. Sugar is an addictive substance that has no nutritional value. It contributes to many diseases and causes a general weakening of the physical body. Unfortunatly most of the world's population is addicted to sugar. And much of the processed food found in super markets have suger infused into it.

For individuals who are willing to give up sugar, honey is an excellent sweetener.

Praise is a reward that is easy to administer. It costs nothing. And we all have the ability to give it to others. If praise is identified as an effective reward then it should be used generously.

For most people activities are strong rewards. Be sure to ask the individual what enjoyable activities they consider to be rewarding.
